Where Will You be, 10 Years from Now?
We usually think about career development and business development for the next 5-10 years based on what worked yesterday. What if what worked yesterday does not work tomorrow?
What if increasing sales through advertising and mass media does not work anymore tomorrow? What if telling customers what they have to buy based on what the corporation wants to sell does not work anymore tomorrow?
Of course, this already stopped working a while ago but many companies still insist on doing these things and force you to comply with these strategies even if it’s clear that they lose money.
What about your job? What if in your field, a job like we know it today does no longer exist tomorrow? What are you going to do when the rules change?
I believe the concept of job is fading.
The first traces of human existence go back around 100’000 years. During all that time, the concept of the “job” exists only since around 200 years. That is 99’800 years of existence without people having “jobs”.
What I want to say with this is that the “job” is a fairly new concept that has been invented for the industrial age. Fact is that the industrial age is over and others will argue, “We are now in a knowledge economy”, so what about the “jobs”?
The Death of the Mighty Corporation
Maybe “death” is a bit of a hard word but I believe that in 5 to 10 years from today, corporations will have much less power than they have today. I believe that small businesses will lead our economy, and corporations will merely be doing what they are told, producing commodity products for the masses.
The only way for corporations to keep innovating will be to buy small companies, like startups and their innovations.
However, the big mistake most of them usually make is to let the innovators go after they bought the startups. This usually forces them to look for another innovative startup to buy for a huge amount of money.
This is a losing game for the corporations and gives the startup founders more capital to create a new innovation. The corporations lose money in the long run since they usually can’t keep the innovation going and at the same time fund a new revolution of startups to take over the economy.
I believe this is a good thing.

The world will always need people who are moving the bricks from point A to point B. however there is absolutely no lack of people who are willing and more than happy to follow instructions and comply.
But what I need you to realize is that, you don’t have to be the one who moves the bricks. You can be the one designing the bricks.
In 1940, the world desperately wanted factory workers. In 1980, the world desperately wanted middle-managers.
Today, the world desperately wants and needs leaders and visionaries.
